Director of Transportation

Our client is a leading international multi-disciplinary practice consistently recognized and awarded at the highest levels for design excellence and technical innovation. The firm leverages its international expertise and in-depth knowledge of local markets through a network of culturally diverse, people centric, global design studios focused on Aviation + Transportation, Civic + Cultural, Commercial, Education, Government, Healthcare, Hospitality, Justice, Recreation + Wellness, Residential, Retail, Science + Technology, Sports, Tall Buildings and Workplace projects. Their innovative work encompasses Architecture, Engineering, Interior Design, Planning + Urban Design, Space Management and Sustainability Consulting. Given the firm’s robust growth and success they are seeking a Director of Transportation.

ROLE:
The Director of Transportation is an industry expert, complementing and developing the firm's established talent and advancing the firm's strategic Transportation Infrastructure initiatives. As a key thought leader in a highly innovative and collaborative global design practice, the Director of Transportation is responsible for winning new commissions, leading project teams as Principal-in-Charge, and leading the Transportation Practice in business development, project design and delivery, client relations, financial management and staff development. Working closely with firmwide and regional Aviation + Transportation teams, they will assist the practice in developing and executing Transportation Infrastructure strategies regionally, nationally, and internationally. As one of the top Aviation + Transportation Practices in the U.S., the firm has successfully delivered over $35 billion of transport projects across the U.S. and globally.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership

  • Be the “trusted advisor” in all matters of Transportation Practice
  • Engage clients in explorations of innovative, appropriate, and sustainable design solutions
  • Facilitate regular meetings with the Transportation team to enable and promote broad and consistent communications at all levels
  • Assess transportation resources, expertise, and experience, and recommend key hires to build a “best in class” team
  • Continually engage Business Development and company leadership regarding goals & objectives
  • Prepare and deliver design presentations to clients; drive consultant work to achieve design goals
  • Foster a commitment to external and internal client service

Management

  • Provide day-to-day administration of the Transportation Practice
  • Develop and successfully execute practice goals, business plan, and profitability; aligning efforts with global, national and regional business unit plans and goals
  • Create and foster a culture of design excellence; initiate project design concepts and idea discussions, provide guidance to design teams during project design development
  • Serve as Principal-In-Charge and/or Project Manager for one or more projects
  • Implement and utilize Firm Standards for all projects and processes. Personally contribute to Firm Standards through new procedure initiation and development 
  • Engage in preparing fee and workload projections for assigned projects
  • Maintain appropriate billable and non-billable percentage of personal and departmental time
  • Oversee project technical and design reviews

Staff Development

  • Mentor, coach and motivate design teams and individuals; fostering an environment of mutual respect and trust among members of the group
  • Prepare and deliver staff evaluations; contribute to performance development, compensation decision-making and allocation processes of department
  • Support diversity and develop continuing education opportunities to expose design staff to influences which will stimulate design creativity and innovation
  • Encourage staff exploration and innovation to achieve transportation design excellence and continual improvement
  • Participate in global and national professional associations, maintain active memberships, and attend conferences valued by clients as appropriate.  Public speaking may be required
  • Foster and promote a green workplace through sustainable work practices
Business Development
  • Create and execute the Transportation Practice marketing strategy; assist with the overall branding and development of Firm’s Aviation + Transportation national practice
  • Identify new business opportunities while developing current client relationships. Listen for and seek out new projects which may exist or are being formulated 
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants, contractors, and jurisdictional/approval agencies to increase stature in the market and community resulting in increased potential business opportunities
  • Collaborate with the marketing department in development of marketing campaigns, award submittals, materials, webinars, overall proposal preparation
  • Direct the preparation of press releases and PR materials publicizing Transportation projects
  • Leverage speaking and writing opportunities to help position the firm as a thought leader

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Architecture/Engineering required.  Master of Architecture/Engineering preferred
  • Licensed Architect/Engineer with current registration. LEED Accredited or Green Associate preferred
  • 15+ years of Transportation experience, with 5+ years in a management/leadership role
  • Proven ability to masterfully present, sell, and negotiate architecture and design services
  • Ability to manage the Transportation Practice with a collaborative leadership style that values internal and external relationships
  • Ability to think strategically, implement change, enforce policy, and resolve conflict
  • Published and/or award-winning projects a plus
  • Advanced talent in programming/planning, design development and project leadership for large-scale Transportation Infrastructure projects
  • Advanced knowledge of progressive technical and regulatory Transportation Infrastructure requirements for design and understanding of fundamental departmental organization and functionality
  • Advanced knowledge of Transportation Infrastructure and facilities design; movement of freight and people
  • Thorough knowledge of sustainability, integrated design, and LEED guidelines
  • Knowledge of buildingSMART, BIM and IPD
  • Thorough understanding of project work plans, schedules, staffing, and budgets
  • Proven ability to prioritize oneself and the work of others to meet deadlines and provide high quality service to clients
  • Proficiency and/or working knowledge of the following computer applications: Deltek Vision, Primavera or MS Project, Microsoft Office Suite, Newforma, AutoCAD/Architectural Desktop, Revit and BIM tools and processes
