Regional Leader of Science + Technology

OVERVIEW:
Our client is a leading International multi-disciplinary practice consistently recognized and awarded at the highest levels for design excellence and technical innovation. The firm leverages its international expertise and in-depth knowledge of local markets through a network of culturally diverse, people centric global design studios focused on Science + Technology, Education, Healthcare, Government, Aviation + Transportation, Civic + Cultural, Commercial, Hospitality, Justice, Recreation + Wellness, Residential, Retail, Sports, Recreation + Entertainment, Tall Buildings and Workplace projects. Their innovative work encompasses Architecture, Engineering, Interior Design, Planning + Urban Design, Space Management and Sustainability Consulting. Given the firm’s robust growth and success they are seeking a Science + Technology Leader based in Houston or Dallas.

ROLE:
The ideal candidate will be passionate about the future of Science + Technology design and planning; how rapidly emerging technologies are changing the function and design of Academic, Pharmaceutical and Government Research facilities, and how advances in science are driving the need for new and more flexible spaces. This dynamic thought leader will work collaboratively with the firm’s deep bench of talent and research to create compelling narratives for the design of S+T related projects throughout the Western Unites States.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership

  • Actively leads and directs the regional S+T Practice team and participates in defining the vision, strategy, and business plans for the firm-wide practice
  • Fulfills the firm-wide Regional Market Leader criteria:
    • Broadly engages the market as a thought leader through speaking and writing
    • Leads engagement with new and existing clients to win new work
    • Leads teams as Principal-in-Charge
    • Participates in Market leadership
    • Participates in Regional Practice Leadership Group
  • Will occasionally serve as principal-in-charge (PIC) for S+T projects
  • Understands the industry, regional client sensitivities, and market drivers
  • Participates with other S+T Regional Leaders and Directors of S+T in firm-wide activities
  • Strong communication skills

  • Fosters a culture of external and internal client service

Management

  • Manages and reports on the business performance of the S+T studio
  • Provides day-to-day administration of the S+T regional practice
  • Primary S+T liaison with the regional business unit
  • Responsible for the successful execution of the defined practice goals and business plan
  • Serve as Principal-In-Charge (PIC) and/or Project Manager on one or more projects
  • Responsible for S+T regional projects
  • Regularly reports regional status to S+T firm-wide leadership team
  • Assists in preparing project fee and workload projections
  • With the appointed PM, is responsible for regional S+T project performance
  • Monitors and maintains an appropriate level of chargeability

Business Development

  • Responsible for the development and execution of the S+T practice’s regional marketing strategy
  • Identifies new business opportunities while maintaining and growing current client relationships
  • Proactively seeks out new opportunities and prospects
  • Participates in regional S+T marketing and business development opportunities, proposals, interviews and presentations
  • Develops and maintains positive industry relationships (i.e. with consultants, contractors and jurisdictional/approval agencies) to support the firm’s standing in the regional marketplace
  • Assists in preparation of other related marketing, promotional, and press-related materials
  • Regularly participates in the S+T industry activities by way of speaking, presenting and/or writing to enhance the S+T practice’s thought leadership

Staff Development

  • Serves as mentor/advisor to S+T related regional staff
  • Lead S+T input on regional staff performance evaluations, including bonus and promotion recommendations
  • Promotes and supports diversity and Participates in recruiting of S+T related staff

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrated creativity, passion and interest in design and planning of S+T focused facilities
  • Advanced knowledge in S+T programming/planning, design development and project leadership
  • Advanced knowledge of technical and regulatory requirements for S+T facilities
  • Thorough knowledge of sustainability, integrated design and LEED guidelines
  • Through understanding of the current laboratory design codes and guidelines
  • Knowledge of buildingSMART, BIM and IPD
  • Ability to manage the S+T department with a collaborative leadership style which puts value on relationships, both internal and external
  • Thorough understanding of project work plans, schedules, staffing, and budgets
  • Proven ability to create and maintain strong working relationships with clients and internal staff
  • Proven ability to masterfully present, effectively sell and negotiate the services of the firm
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Proficiency in the basic technical skills of architecture including the following computer skills:
    • Proficiency in Deltek Vision highly preferred
    • Proficiency in Primavera or MS Project, Newforma preferred
    • Proficiency in MS Office Suite required
    • Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD/Architectural Desktop preferred
    • Knowledge of 3D Modeling software such as 3D Studio Max and Viz 2006 preferred
    • Knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketchup, and InDesign graphic software preferred

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Architecture or education/experience equivalent required. Master’s degree preferred
  • 10 yrs of science and technology experience, with at least 5 yrs in a management/leadership role
  • Industry recognized thought leader; Published and/or award-winning projects a plus
  • Licensed Architect with current registration in your region required (if offered in your region)
  • NCARB registration preferred
  • LEED credential required within 6 months of employment
